AI In Construction Is Almost Here
Welcome to the Real Estate Espresso broadcast, your morning shot of what’s new in the world of real estate investing. I’m your host, Victor Menasce. On today’s show, we’re taking another look at artificial intelligence. So far, when we think of AI, most people think of something like chatGBT or Google Gemini, but that’s just the tip of the iceberg. The real revolution will be the marriage of AI and robotics, a complete remake of virtually all the physical products in existence. Imagine autonomous vehicles, lawnmowers, aircraft, cooking tools, and construction equipment.
The US administration seems focused on bringing manufacturing back to the US, but I believe that the US should be winning the factories of the future. These facilities will first need to manufacture the robots that will be used to manufacture the products. If we fail to take that first step, we’ll end up manufacturing in the US, Canada, and Europe with Chinese robots, relegating our Western economies to a second tier. Europe, having erected so many regulatory barriers, has little chance to achieve AI leadership, and most of their bright minds are heading to the US.
Today, I want to showcase a start-up company called Bedrock Robotics. They’re focusing on heavy construction excavators and are revolutionizing the construction industry by adding autonomy to existing excavators. It’s backed by investors like Eclipse and ABV and headquartered in San Francisco, where they are focusing on one of the most pressing issues in the $13 trillion global construction industry: labor shortages.
40% of construction workers are expected to retire within the next decade and over one and a quarter billion hours are spent annually operating heavy equipment in the U.S. alone. Bedrock’s mission is to bridge the gap between the rising infrastructure demands and the dwindling workforce. With a labor shortage like this, costs for everyone will go up. This is an opportunity to increase productivity and bring costs down, making many currently unviable projects a possibility in the future.
Rather than making new autonomous machinery, Bedrock is taking a retrofit first approach. Their flagship product, Bedrock Operator, is a hardware and software solution that can be installed on existing heavy equipment like excavators, ideally in a single day. This strategy makes autonomy accessible and scalable for construction firms who want to upgrade their fleet without the need for costly replacements. Even an excavator, which usually takes an operator five to seven years to master, can be loaded with the collective knowledge of hundreds or thousands of operators in a single day with AI.
Bedrock Operator isn’t just a remote control system; it’s a fully autonomous platform that can navigate complex environments and adapt to unexpected situations in real time. It’s designed to work safely and seamlessly around the clock, greatly improving productivity and minimizing downtime. Although noise ordinances might prevent round-the-clock construction in urban areas, this is a possibility in remote locations. The technology integrates smoothly into existing construction workflows to minimize disruption during adoption and maximize compatibility with current management tools.
The company is using its recent funding to scale its engineering, operations, and commercialization teams with the aim of fully autonomous deployment by next year. If they succeed, we could see fully autonomous construction sites much sooner. By using a retrofit first strategy, Bedrock is preparing to transform the construction industry, making autonomy practical, affordable, and scalable. This is just the start of modernizing construction technology.
As you reflect on this, have an amazing rest of your day. Make some great things happen. I’ll talk to you again tomorrow.
